You want more power. You want that aggressive, earth-shaking rumble that lets everyone know your modern muscle car has arrived. But you also have to drive this beast to work on Monday.
When it comes to upgrading your exhaust system, the debate usually boils down to one question: Long Tube vs. Shorty Headers.
Both will outperform your factory cast-iron manifolds, but they serve two very different masters. One is built for maximum, high-RPM dominance; the other is built for efficiency, legality, and ease of use. At DTX Performance, we don't do "average." We do performance.
Select your path below.
The Science of Scavenging
Before you pull the trigger, you need to understand why headers matter. Your factory manifolds are designed for one thing: mass production. They are restrictive and create backpressure that chokes your engine.
Long tube headers and shorty headers solve this by using individual primary tubes for each cylinder. This creates a "scavenging" effect: where the velocity of the exhaust gas leaving one cylinder actually helps pull the exhaust out of the next one.
Better flow equals more air/fuel in. More air/fuel in equals more power out.
Long Tube Headers: The Heavy Hitters

If you are looking for the absolute maximum gain in horsepower and torque, long tubes are the only answer. These are the gold standard for modern muscle cars like the Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Camaro.
Push for Maximum Performance
Long tube headers, like those from American Racing Headers (ARH), feature long primary tubes that converge into a single collector far down the exhaust line. This design is optimized for high-RPM scavenging.
- Power Gains: Expect 20–40+ HP depending on your application and tune.
- Torque: Massive gains across the mid-to-high rev range.
- Sound: Deep, aggressive, and loud. It will turn heads.
The Trade-Offs
- Installation: It’s a battle. You’ll often need to lift the engine or drop the subframe. It requires a matching mid-pipe (X-pipe or H-pipe).
- Legality: Most long tubes delete or relocate the factory catalytic converters. In states like California or New York, this is for "Off-Road Use Only."
- Heat: More surface area means more under-hood heat. We always recommend ceramic coating.
Shorty Headers: The Stealth Upgrade

Shorty headers are designed to be a direct replacement for your factory manifolds. They are compact and typically bolt right up to your existing factory mid-pipe and catalytic converters.
Build a Balanced Daily Driver
If you live in an area with strict emissions testing or you simply don't want to deal with the "drone" of a full race exhaust, shorties are your best friend.
- Power Gains: Modest. You’ll see 5–15 HP. It’s an efficiency play.
- Legality: Most are 50-state legal and carry CARB EO numbers. You keep your cats and pass inspection.
- Installation: Usually a "bolt-on" affair. No mid-pipe swaps or O2 sensor extensions required.
The Trade-Offs
- Peak Power: You will never see the triple-digit torque gains that a set of long tubes can provide.
- Sound: It’s a "refined" aggressive. Better than stock, but it won't wake the neighbors three blocks away.
The Daily Driver Verdict

Choosing between the two depends on your tolerance for volume and your local laws.
Select Long Tubes If:
- You want the best performance possible.
- You are planning for future mods like a supercharger or cam.
- You don't have to worry about visual emissions inspections.
- You want that legendary muscle car scream.
Select Shorties If:
- You need to pass emissions and stay 100% street legal.
- You want a subtle increase in power and sound without the "race car" headaches.
- You are on a tighter budget for both parts and labor.
Shop With Confidence
Whether you are building a track-focused Camaro ZL1 or a daily-driven Ford Mustang GT, DTX Performance has the hardware to get you there. We specialize in modern muscle and only stock the brands that survive the street and the strip.

Action Steps for Your Build:
- Check Your Local Laws: Know if you need to keep your factory cat locations.
- Define Your Goal: Is this a weekend warrior or a 40-mile commuter?
- Select Your Brand: We recommend American Racing Headers or Kooks for uncompromising quality.
- Plan the Tune: Long tubes require a tune to maximize power and turn off the Check Engine Light.
Push your vehicle further. Build it right the first time.
