If you own a Hellcat, you already know the addiction. That signature supercharger whine is more than just noise: it’s the sound of potential. But for most owners, the factory 707 (or 717/797) horsepower is just a baseline. You want more. You want that neck-snapping torque that comes from a smaller pulley.

But here is the hard truth: You cannot push more air into the engine without providing the fuel to match.

At DTX Performance, we see it all the time. Enthusiasts rush to swap their upper pulley to a 2.85” or a 2.72” because it’s a relatively cheap and easy way to gain 50–100 horsepower. However, skipping the injector upgrade is the fastest way to turn your Hemi into a very expensive paperweight.

The Physics of Power: Why Fuel is the Bottleneck

Every internal combustion engine operates on a specific ratio of air to fuel. When you swap to a smaller supercharger pulley, you are physically spinning the rotors faster at every RPM. This creates more boost pressure and shoves a higher volume of air into the combustion chamber.

To keep that engine happy, the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) must command more fuel to maintain the correct Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR). If you add more air but your fuel system can't keep up, you run "lean." In a high-boost application like a Hellcat, running lean leads to detonation (knock), high cylinder temperatures, and eventually, melted pistons.

The Factory Limits: Know Your Numbers

The factory Hellcat fuel system is an engineering marvel, but it wasn't built with infinite overhead.

  • Stock Hellcat Injectors: These are approximately 600cc (57 lbs/hr) units. They are perfectly sized for the factory 2.4L supercharger spinning at stock speeds.
  • The Duty Cycle: Fuel injectors have a "duty cycle," which is the percentage of time they are open. Ideally, you want to stay below an 80-85% duty cycle for safety. On a stock Hellcat at wide-open throttle (WOT), these injectors are already working hard.
  • The Demon Exception: Dodge upgraded the Demon to 700cc (67 lbs/hr) injectors to support its higher factory output. Many Hellcat owners use Demon injectors as a "budget" upgrade, but even these have a ceiling.

Once you drop the pulley size, you immediately exceed the safe duty cycle of the stock 600cc injectors. You are essentially asking a garden hose to do the job of a fire hose. It might work for a few seconds, but the pressure and volume aren't there when the heat is on.

The 2.85” and 2.72” Pulley Thresholds

If you are planning a pulley swap, you need to select your injectors based on your final power goals.

The 2.85” Pulley

This is often considered the "sweet spot" for street-driven Hellcats. It provides a noticeable bump in boost without requiring a total overhaul of the cooling system. However, even with a 2.85” pulley, the stock injectors are maxed out. Most tuners will require at least a set of Demon injectors or, more commonly, 1000cc+ injectors to ensure there is enough safety margin in the tune.

The 2.72” Pulley

Now you’re playing for keeps. The 2.72” pulley spins the supercharger significantly faster, generating heat and massive air volume. At this level, Demon injectors are no longer enough. You are firmly in the territory of Injector Dynamics (ID) 1050x or equivalent high-performance injectors.

E85: The Ultimate Fuel Requirement

Everything we just discussed applies to standard 93 octane pump gas. If you decide to run E85 (Ethanol), the rules change completely.

Ethanol has a lower energy density than gasoline, meaning you need to spray roughly 30% more fuel to achieve the same power. If you want the cooling benefits and the massive timing advance that E85 offers, your fuel requirements skyrocket.

For an E85 Hellcat with a pulley swap, 1000cc injectors are the bare minimum, and most serious builds will step up to ID1300x injectors to ensure they never run out of breath at the top of the track. Pushing a Hellcat on E85 with undersized injectors is a gamble you will eventually lose.

Selection Guide: Pick Your Performance

When you shop for injectors at DTX Performance, you need to choose based on your roadmap. Don't buy injectors for the power you have today; buy for the power you want tomorrow.

  1. Stage 1 (Bolt-ons only): Stock injectors are fine.
  2. Stage 2 (2.85” Pulley / 93 Octane): Upgrade to 1000cc/1050cc injectors. This gives you plenty of headroom and a smooth idle.
  3. Stage 3 (2.72” Pulley / E85 / High Boost): Step up to 1300cc injectors. This is the gold standard for high-horsepower street and strip Hellcats.

Shop with confidence. Choosing the right fuel delivery components ensures that your engine stays together while you’re gapping the competition.

Supporting the Build: Beyond Injectors

Fueling isn't just about the injectors. To make the most of your new power, you need to ensure the rest of your Hellcat is ready for the abuse. A car that goes fast needs to sound right and hook hard.

Consider pairing your fueling upgrades with a high-flow exhaust system to help those extra exhaust gases exit the engine efficiently. An MBRP Race Series Exhaust or a Borla ATAK system provides the aggressive tone that matches your new boost levels.

Furthermore, if you're pushing the limits of the Hemi platform, don't forget the headers. American Racing Headers are a staple in the Mopar community for a reason: they offer the precision fit and flow required for 800+ horsepower builds.

Precision Tuning: The Final Piece

Injectors are not a "plug and play" mod in the sense that you can just swap them and drive. Because they flow more fuel than the stock units, your PCM needs to be recalibrated. A professional tuner will adjust the injector flow rate, offset, and timing to ensure the car idles like stock but delivers the mail when you floor it.

Push your limits, but do it safely. A pulley swap without injectors is half a job. Do it right the first time so you can spend more time on the track and less time in the shop.
