If you’re still driving your 2010–2015 Camaro with the factory "suitcase" muffler hanging off the back, we need to have a serious talk. The 5th Gen Camaro is a modern legend, but GM did the LS3 and L99 a massive disservice in the acoustics department.

Upgrading your aftermarket performance parts starts with the "Big Three": Air, Fuel, and Spark. But the one that gives you the most immediate satisfaction is the exhaust. Choosing the right aftermarket exhaust isn't just about being the loudest guy at the stoplight: it’s about tone, flow, and eliminating that soul-crushing cabin drone.

At DTX Performance, we live for the "chop." Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly axleback exhaust or a full-performance catback exhaust, you need to know what you’re getting into before you turn a wrench.

Build Hack: Axle-back vs. Cat-back

Before we dive into the brands, let’s clear up the confusion.

  • Axleback Exhaust: This replaces everything from the rear axle to the tips. It’s primarily for sound. If you’re on a budget and your factory mid-pipes are in good shape, this is a quick win. It’s the easiest way to get that V8 growl without breaking the bank.
  • Catback Exhaust: This replaces everything from the catalytic converters back. This includes the mid-pipes (usually adding an X-pipe or H-pipe) and the rear mufflers. If you’re chasing horsepower and want maximum flow for future mods like long tube headers, a catback is the only way to go.

The Contenders: Real Talk on Sound Profiles

Every exhaust brand has a "DNA." Some are high-pitched and exotic; others are deep, low-frequency muscle. Here is the DTX breakdown of the heavy hitters.

AWE Exhaust: The Precision Instrument

AWE has taken the Camaro world by storm with its "180 Technology." If you want a refined sound that screams at Wide Open Throttle (WOT) but remains civilized while cruising, AWE is the play. Their Touring Edition is famous for being one of the few systems that can actually handle the dreaded drone of an automatic L99 engine. If you want raw, unadulterated volume, their Track Edition is essentially a straight-pipe setup with beautiful tips.

Borla Exhaust: The Gold Standard

Borla is the "set it and forget it" choice. They offer three distinct levels:

  1. Touring: Just a bit louder than stock. Perfect for sleepers.
  2. S-Type: The "Goldilocks" zone. Deep, throaty, and aggressive when you step on it.
  3. ATAK: This stands for "Abnormally Toxic Air Killer." It is loud. It is crisp. It is designed for the guy who wants everyone within a three-block radius to know he’s coming. Borla's multi-core technology is excellent for keeping the frequency out of the "drone zone."

Corsa Exhaust: The Drone Killer

Corsa is the undisputed king of Reflective Sound Cancellation (RSC) technology. If you are extremely sensitive to interior resonance (drone), just buy a Corsa and move on. Their sound profile is unique: it’s higher pitched, almost like a NASCAR cup car. It’s very quiet at idle but sounds like a banshee at 6,000 RPM.

MBRP Exhaust: The Value King

If you want the most "bang for your buck," MBRP exhaust is the answer. They use a traditional chambered muffler design that provides a very deep, old-school muscle car rumble. While they may not have the exotic tech of Corsa or AWE, their Pro Series 304 stainless systems are rugged and get the job done for a fraction of the cost.

The Drone Combat: L99 (Auto) vs. LS3 (Manual)

Here is a "Real Talk" moment most shops won't tell you: your transmission choice dictates your exhaust choice.

The LS3 (Manual): You have it easy. Since the engine stays in V8 mode all the time, you can run almost any aftermarket exhaust without major issues. You just need to worry about the natural resonance of the car at highway speeds (usually around 1,800–2,200 RPM).

The L99 (Automatic): You have Active Fuel Management (AFM). When your car cruises on the highway, it drops to 4-cylinder mode to save gas. With a loud exhaust, this sounds like a wet weed-wacker. It’s terrible.

  • Build Hack: If you have an L99, you must either buy an exhaust with AFM valves, choose a drone-canceling system like Corsa or AWE Touring, or (the better option) use a tuner to disable AFM entirely.

Push for Power: Headers and Flow

If you really want to wake up a 5th Gen, you can’t stop at the catback. The factory manifolds are incredibly restrictive. To get the most out of your catback exhaust, you need long tube headers.

We recommend Kooks headers or Stainless Works exhaust headers for the 5th Gen platform. Swapping to 1-7/8" or 2" primary headers will not only net you a solid 25–40 rear-wheel horsepower (with a tune), but it will also completely change the volume of your car.

  • Warning: Adding headers to an already loud exhaust (like an ATAK or AWE Track) will make your car "wake the neighbors' neighbors" loud. Plan accordingly.

Complete the Build: Stance and Traction

A loud car that can't hook is just noise. Once you've sorted the sound, you need to look at your wheel setup. If you're hitting the local drag strip, those heavy factory 20-inch wheels have to go.

We see a lot of 5th Gen guys running a Drag Pack to get that aggressive "Big and Littles" look. Weld Wheels are the industry standard for strength and weight savings, while Forgestar Wheels (specifically the F14 drag series) offer a killer modern look that clears big brakes.

Whether you need Drag Wheels, Drag racing wheels, or just a set of Weld Wheels to handle the launch, getting the unsprung weight down is the best way to complement your new exhaust power.

Summary: Which One Should You Buy?

  • Choose AWE if: You want a modern, refined sound and incredible tips.
  • Choose Borla if: You want a classic American V8 rumble with a perfect fit.
  • Choose Corsa if: You hate drone more than anything and love a high-pitched scream.
  • Choose MBRP if: You want a deep sound on a budget.
